Spondylolisthesis

1. Overview

Spondylolisthesis can occur when the vertebrae slips away from the normal position, resulting in pain that can be from mild to very serious. In a healthy individual, the vertebrae stay neatly stacked in their position, which allows the individual to move freely. When one slips out of place, the ability to balance is compromised. The shift can either be very slight to even notice it, or sometimes so severe to interfere with daily life. This most commonly occurs in the lower back region, which carries most of the body’s weight and have to undergo constant strain from lifting, twisting and bending.

2. Causes

Spondylolisthesis can occur to different people because of different reasons. Young people generally develop it from a small crack or weakness of the bone. It can also be developed by basic activities like playing football, weightlifting or gymnastics. As people age, the discs that help the spine to stay in shape weakens, which can further lead to development of this disease. Sometimes, an injury from a fall or any sudden impact can also trigger the condition. In some cases, some people are born with a weak spine or a spinal structure that makes them more prone to disease like spondylolisthesis.

  • Stiffness in the lower back and tightness in hamstrings.

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor

The evaluation usually begins with physical check of the spine’s alignment. The tenderness is also observed by pressing gently on the lower back. If the patient finds it hard to bend their spine backward, it can be a sign of instability. The nerve functioning are also assessed by checking the reflexes, muscle strength and ability to sense any stimuli. An X-ray or an MRI can be performed to get a clear picture of the spine and know the severity of the disease.
