1. Overview
Lumbar spinal stenosis usually happens when the nerves that travel down into the legs are put into pressure. This is because the spaces in the lower back becomes narrower. This usually happens over time, and not suddenly. At starting, it may be hard to notice any symptoms, but as it gets worse, the patient can suffer from pain, numbness or tingling in the legs more often. This is more common in older adults, as their spine becomes weak with age. This can also happen to younger people especially of they’ve suffered any injury or has any condition.
2. Causes
Lumbar spinal stenosis develops very slowly with time. This happens as the spine becomes weak over time. The discs between the vertebrae dries out. All of these changes can make one develop symptoms like pain or numbness in the legs. The symptoms may improve when leaning forward or sitting down, but it is important to get checked up as fast as possible. The risks are more for those individuals who’ve had back injuries, spinal deformities or any condition.

3. High Risk Individuals
Experiencing age-related spinal changes.
Patients with history of arthritis affecting the spine
Those who have sustained back injuries.
Individuals born with a narrow spinal canal.
People with spinal deformities such as scoliosis.

4. Symptoms
Dull or aching pain in the lower back.
Tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles” in the legs.
Weakness in one or both legs
Pain that flares up when walking or standing
Frequent rests during walks due to discomfort

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor
When a patient is examined for lumbar spinal stenosis, the stiffness in the lower back is observed and tender spots are found out by gently pressing over certain vertebrae. The patient finds it hard to move their body or bend backwards. A neurological check is conducted to see any changes in reflexes, or reduced sensation. Straightening or extending the spine can make the symptoms worse. An MRI or CT scan is commonly done to get a clear picture of where the narrowing is.
