1. Overview
A spine cancer can develop when some abnormal cells grow in the areas of spinal column uncontrollably. This affects the bones of the spine, nerves and even the spinal cord itself. Most of the time, the cancer usually starts somewhere else – such as the lungs, prostate, breasts, etc. and spreads to the spine through bloodstream. The worst thing is it usually show little or no symptoms at first, thus it can be easily ignored. However, the tumor can grow and press on the spinal cord or nerves, which can cause weakness, numbness and even problem in mobility. It is generally rare as compared to other kinds of cancer, and can be treated if detected early.
2. Causes
It is generally caused when the normal cells in the spine change and grow uncontrollably. This is often due to damage in their DNA. Sometimes, the cancer can start directly in the bones of the spine, but mostly it starts in some other parts like – the lungs, breasts or prostate, and spread to the spine. There are various factors which can contribute to the chances of happening – this includes a weakened immune system, genetic conditions, or expose to radiation or toxic chemicals. Regular health checkups are important to detect early, since there are usually no symptoms at the early stages.

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor
When the patient is suspected of spine cancer, the warning signs are looked first. The area along the spine is pressed gently to find any tender spots. A neurological test is also performed to check if the cancer has affected the nerves. If the tumor is passed to the spinal cord, the patient may find it harder to walk and balance. In severe cases, the bladder or bowel movements can also be affected. An MRI or CT scan is usually done to get a clear picture and identify the exact size and location of the tumor. Some additional tests are also done to find out if the cancer originated in the spine or has spread from other part of the body.
