1. Overview
A lumbar slip disc happens when one of the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the lower back moves out of place. This is also called a herniated or prolapsed disc. If the inner layer of these discs pushes through a weak spot in the outer layer, nearby nerves can get pressed. This can cause pain in the lower back or legs. This pain can also sometimes shoot like an electric shock, this condition is known as sciatica. Some people can experience severe pain, while some people may not even experience anything. It can happen due to sudden impact or the twisting of the disc awkwardly.
2. Causes
A lumbar slip disc doesn’t happen overnight. It occurs as people age and their bones of the spine starts to weaken. The discs in the spine dries out and loses flexibility, making them more prone to small cracks. Everyday activities are also responsible for it to happen early – this can include lifting heavy objects, twisting suddenly or low mobility. Even genetics can play a role in making one more prone to lumbar slip disc. Weak core and back muscles also reduces the ability to keep a proper alignment.

3. High Risk Individuals
Individuals aged 30-50, when discs starts to deteriorate.
People at work who require heavy lifting.
Individuals who spend prolonged periods sitting.
People with excess body weight.
Those possessing weak core or back muscles.

4. Symptoms
Aching or sharp pain in the lower back.
Pain radiating to the buttocks, thighs, or down one leg.
Tingling sensations, pins-and-needles, or numbness.
Weakness in the leg muscles.
Pain that intensifies with coughing, sneezing.

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor
When assessing a patient with possible symptoms of lumbar slip disc, the movements of the lower back are observed to find any specific area of discomfort. Neurological testings are also done to check for reflexes, muscle weakness or patches of numbness. The patient may be asked to walk around to check for the balance. To confirm the diagnosis, an MRI or CT scan is typically done to get a clear view of the affected disc and the severity of it.
