Spine TB

1. Overview

Spinal tuberculosis is a kind of TB that affects the human spine. It is also called as Pott’s disease. The germs that cause this disease are mainly present in the lungs first. It can travel through the bloodstream to the spine. The symptoms are usually very mild first and can be ignored easily. But if the infection grows, the germs starts eating away the bones and discs, making the spine weak. This can bend the spine forward and affecting the mobility. One of the worst thing about spine TB is that it’s not usually detected in the early stages. But if found and treated on time, most people recover fully and get back to their normal routine.

2. Causes

Spinal TB is caused by the same germ that leads to lung TB, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is the same germ that causes lung TB. Most of the time, the bacteria first starts in the lungs and then travel to spine through the blood or lymph. In some person, the bacteria may be present in the body for years without causing any trouble. It will start to show symptoms only when the immune system becomes weak. There are a lot of factors for which spine TB can happen – poor nutrition, weak immune system or living in crowded place can contribute for spine TB to occur.

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor

The first step for checking a patient with possible symptoms of spine TB is just a simple observation – It involves looking for any change in posture or curve in the back. Any tender spot is found out by pressing gently along the spine. The patient is asked if they have any trouble in movements like bending or twisting. The nerve functioning is also tested by checking the reflexes and muscle strength. An X-ray or an MRI can be performed to get a clear picture of what’s happening and know how far the infection has spread.
