1. Overview
A spinal deformity happens when the spine curve or twist from it’s original shape. In a healthy individual, the spine has gentle and balanced curves that helps them to stand straight or absorb shock as they walk. But if those curves becomes uneven or distorted, they affect the individual’s posture, comfort and even the mobility. Spinal deformities can occur either earlier when body grows, or in later stages of life due to aging or injuries. The severity of the deformity and the symptoms can vary in every individual.
2. Causes
There are various reasons for which spine deformity can happen. Some people are born with it, and some may develop it during growth. As people age, conditions like osteoporosis or natural wear and tear of spinal discs can also contribute to the deformity. Various other factors like injuries or fractures can also cause spinal deformity. Maintaining a poor posture for a long time can also worsen the symptoms of spinal deformity.

3. High Risk Individuals

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor
When a patient comes in with problems related to spine, the first step usually starts with asking them the history, intensity of pain, and if any of their family member has had similar spinal issues. Then, a physical exam is followed. The patient’s shoulders, hips and spine alignment are seen. They may be asked to bend forward so to see curve easily. The flexibility of the spine is also checked. The nerve functioning is also checked by checking the reflexes and muscle strength. X-rays or an MRI scan is done to get a clear picture of the bones and nerves, and to further give the best treatment.
