1. Overview
A spine fracture refers to a condition where the vertebrae (a bone in the back of body) breaks, resulting in serious pain. The intensity of the breakage can vary - it might be tiny, or a large one. This breakage can happen mostly anywhere in the back, but most primarily it is seen in the middle (thoracic) or lower (lumbar) areas. The severity of fracture can also vary and results in showing different symptoms to different individuals. A severe fracture can even alter the functioning of nerves and cause larger problems. It is advised to anyone having back pain, or encounter an accident, to get checked by doctor as soon as possible.
2. Causes
There are various reasons for which spine fractures can happen. The impact required for fracture to happen can also vary in each individual. Individuals with a strong and healthy spine usually requires a heavy impact for spine fracture to occur. But, the individuals who already has a weak spine, are in greater risk. There are conditions like osteoporosis that can make the vertebrae very weak, which can infact increase the chances of spine fracture even more. Other illnesses that weakens the spine can also increase the chances of spine fracture.

3. High Risk Individuals
Older adults, due to natural bone density loss
Osteoporosis patients with weaken bones
Those with a history of prior back injuries
Athletes participating in high-impact sports
Long-term users of corticosteroid medications

4. Symptoms

Pain that intensifies when standing/moving
Gradual decrease in height over months or years
A noticeable curvature or hunch in the upper back

5. Clinical Findings by Doctor
When a patient with possible symptoms of spine fracture comes in, firstly, their history is discussed – when and how the pain started, was there any accident or anything. This is followed by a physical exam. The exact area of the pain is found out by gently pressing along the spine. If any nerve involvement is suspected, the muscle strength of the patient is checked by asking the patient to push against their hand and their legs. Their skin sensation and reflexes are also tested. In serious cases, problems with bladder and bowel controls can also be seen, and if found, urgent attention is given. To get a clear picture of the spine, imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs are done.
